The Rest Week

9 Apr

Recovery weeks are always tough for me. I imagine that others struggle similarly with them, but it’s hard to say. You go from typically the most difficult/3rd week of your last training block to reducing intensity and volume.

I spent the entire week feeling like I was over-eating because I was hungry, and my body was used to eating the amount of calories of someone training 16+ hours, not someone training 10. I did not spend my extra 6-7 hours sleeping, doing yoga, or relaxing. It was a tough week in any case due to some changes around the house.

Namely, Justin is changing jobs. We work together now. So, we make breakfast in the morning, commute together, work, train, commute home, make dinner. Justin’s new job nets him about 2-3 hours a day in the car commuting (vs. 10-15 minutes now), and since it’s nowhere near me, we’ll no longer be making breakfast, commuting, training, or making dinner together anymore. We’re both bummed, and the new job is going to bring about a LOT of changes for both of us as far as lifestyle, work, training, etc. I know that we’ll tackle it as best we can, but in the meantime there are a lot of questions and some stress, as well as some excitement and the possibility of really good things in the future.

So, without further ado… rest week.

Monday was off and I took no photos. Oops.

Tuesday we got out for an easy ride… weather was nice all week, bonus!

Dinner!

I went an entire week without buying beer. I think I call that a success.

Got out on the mountain bikes Wednesday after work for a good spin at Vail Lake.

Spent a few rides over the week using my O-tus Safe Sounds ear buds with bluetooth player. Stellar!

Long shadows in the evening light

Paleo medley! Thanks, Steph

Had to re-up on Endur-It. It’s tough getting in all this riding without good chamois cream!!

Thursday it was a little chillier for our ride… made sure to be dressed appropriately

Gonna miss this soon enough

Since Justin didn’t want to glom on to “Perris – Rubidoux” and do a ride on some of Riverside’s greatest cobbles, Thursday we did some of our “cobbled”/dirt riding…

Heading back from the hills guy on the bike path warned us a few times as we crossed paths that there was a snake on the trail. He seemed much more concerned than we were… gopher snake. Justin shoo’d him off the path

Thursday I spent part of the day wearing “normal” shoes (I want to be a real boy!). Recovering 110% with compression socks. Yessss.

Cheat meal for the week (I didn’t buy the beer, so it doesn’t count – also, blech!)

Justin successfully navigated us home from dinner out without getting fro-yo. SUCCESS.

Friday – first full day of no winter boots at work. Also, got back in the gym for some core work! It was about time. Finally healed up from my myriad of crashing injuries.

While Heather was sauteeing kale, I roasted some of my own to hide flank steak, kabocha squash, asparagus, and brussels sprouts. YUM

Saturday we got a super late start to the day… spent the morning Spring cleaning collecting a ton of bags of clothes and small appliances to donate.

As we were finishing up collecting goods around the house, I realized we didn’t have our road bikes. They were at work. OK, time to donate and collect the bikes for a ride!

Ready to…

Nice day to be all METAL n good n stuff

Lunch up in Idy

Fairly solid recovery week. Though I feel ok and rested, my legs are sort of sore and I haven’t been sleeping.

Maybe I just need to get back to that constant fatigue of training hard for everything to reset! On to the next block. LOTS of racing coming my way. Along with 2 cold late winter storms :\
