Pounding the Pavement
5 Aug
Well, as you maybe gathered from my recent posts I’ve been enjoying myself just a little bit lately. I sort of came to the conclusion that I was either going to wind up gaining 20lbs (including a beer belly), or that I needed to lay out a plan for myself for training. Knowing that if I went the weight gain and beer belly route I would likely not be very competitive next year for racing I basically just laid out a few weeks for myself based on the training I started up after Justin’s accident, adding in weights 2x weeks with some treadmill running (ok, to everyone that runs, I am really jogging – but that feels fast for me – not cardiovascularly difficult, but fast for the legs).
Essentially, my entire body is going to be sore and tired probably for the next month or so. BUT, hopefully I’ll have a few strong months this fall for some CX racing and otherwise just enjoy myself and start building strength for next season, and also it’ll get me back on the bike hopefully for some double digit volume training weeks (low double digit, mind you).
This is 4 months and 2 days in the making, folks!
Justin at long last was able to put together a new road bike (huge thanks to Rock N’ Road)!!! He was able to pick up pretty much an identical frame to his last one, just a different color – 09 SL2. Anyone looking for Specialized double standard road cranks? We have a set!
At any rate, he was just complaining about the pace about 20 minutes before this, where he took off and left me in his dust
Yesterday evening after work and errands the bikes were on the rack and we have a super short freeway jaunt and we’re halfway home and Justin let’s out an explicative and states that his bike has fallen off the rack. I had my head down so naturally assumed the bike had completely ejected from the rack. I freaked out. He slowly pulled over despite me yelling “STOP STOP STOP” frantically and I hopped out. The bike had not been run over by any cars; it was still halfway attached to the rack.
This is only a re-enactment!
I was so hopped up on adrenaline that I honestly don’t remember how the bike was situated when I hoisted it back to its rightful and proper position in the rack, but there are no marks or scratches, so we couldn’t figure out any other way it could’ve “fallen”.
Phew. Disaster averted.
Today I hit the gym for some light weights and some plyos. My legs still feel destroyed. Can’t wait to see how they feel tomorrow.
It is nice to get back to it, despite not having a tangible goal outside of racing well next year. However, I think maybe it is part of the process. I don’t know that the workouts I’ve put together will net me much in the way of gains, but basically I hope it just doesn’t set me back any at this point. I’ve already had about 2 2-week breaks this year, so for now I’ve run out of “transition” periods and just need to stick with some steady pedaling.
Until next time…
…oh yeah, “I can see the weekend from here.”

you should come do crossfit with me. you will see results and that is a promise…
It’s a little far for a morning workout!! Hoping my plyo’s are somewhat cycling specific also
transition periods are the best. my whole training plan is constantly changing from transition-plan-trans-plan. usually morning workout, transition to beer and whiskey in the evenings. nothin wrong with that right?
CX is gonna be awesome! cant wait to see you crush womens field dreams.
chanson and I agreed to a Crossfit/Bikram challenge…he tries Bikram, I try Crossfit and we’ll see which one is harder. First one to puke loses!
In any case, so good to see J back on the road and more importantly, that your training partner is back. You did a very respectable job sticking it out solo
workign out? what’s that? congrats on your new program…sworks roadie cranks? carbon? I have an 08 sworks tarmac sl2 that might be able to take them…
We can bring them west this weekend if you want to see? I have no idea what they go for, but they’re brand new.
well you don’t have to come to Costa Mesa to enjoy Crossfit. I just searched in your area and there are 3 different gyms within a 5-10 mile radius of you. Not to say you have to do it, but it might be something to look into. Most places offer a free intro class to see what it’s all about.

Yeah Anneke is local here and she and her hubby run one I think!
It’s always a joy to read your post Allison. Thank goodness you guys didn’t lose the bike.
Are you racing the Bonelli invitational in September?
Rock and Road hooking it up!!! nice to hear about and see him back on the skinnys. I may need to get over there and show some love to my wardrobe, Maybe work them into my rotation when I get back on the bike.
Hey I’ve got an AWESOME plyo workout if you’re interested or want to change things up a little… let me know! Helped me a TON when I wanted to be more explosive and just stronger.
