So Much for the After Glow

28 Jun

Justin and I were both stoked about his return to the bike on Thursday.  I was so excited I planned a second ride!  I drove down to the coast Saturday morning to meet up with James and Weeger for a big (for me) day on the road.

It was nice and cool as we set out, but we knew warmer temps were in store

Following James on his daily route

Getting sunnier as we headed inland

Super steep section coming right up

Coastal!

I worried about being late to Justin’s ride, but I made it in time (he was in the middle of a huge battle though haha).  We got out to SRP and did a chill ride with DenMo, Roger, and Doug.  Justin led us off the entire ride!  Too many weeks of pent up energy.

We had a small BBQ at our place after the ride and had a bit too much fun. I stayed up late, so Sunday morning got a late start on the mountain bike with Luke. I felt okay on the climbs (legs were pretty good actually), but descending I felt out of whack and off my game. The last fire road descent I just didn’t feel good – needed calories and water for sure. It was super hot out.

Can you feel the heat radiating?

The bugs were insane!

Once at the bottom of the fire road Luke and I decided to spin through the neighborhood. He hopped on a dirt path by the sidewalk and I thought, “Oh, fun. I should get a picture of this.” #fail. Noticed a huge “landscaping speed bump” at the last minute and grabbed wayyyy too much front brake. Slammed down on my right ring fingernail, left knee and elbow. Lots of abrasions (including left hand) and now I’m down to 9 fingernails.

Spent a few hours in ER.

I looked way better than I felt here

Glove was lost (didn’t want to take it off over my finger that was ripped to shreds). All else is okay as skin will heal. Not sure what it means on the riding front? Throbbing pretty good today and walking around is tough. Always fun to go down super hard with big races coming up. Yessss.

Tally: lost a fingernail, left pinky is pretty shredded, dirt rash on left knee and elbow, some random soreness.

Justin has more follow-ups with the docs this week so we will see how all is going. Hopefully nothing to report except that it is going and to keep on keeping on.  Maybe he’ll get out for some riding again this weekend!
